Everything attached to the beliefs, activities and objectives of this Council must, and always will align with the beliefs and mandates of the DD Act (which is our funding source) in regards to advocacy, systems change and capacity building:

“Since the DD Act was enacted, it has come to represent a fundamentally different vision of what it means to live with a developmental disability. It is a vision rooted in the belief that “disability is a natural part of the human experience that does not diminish the right of individuals with developmental disabilities to live independently, to exert control and choice over their own lives, and to fully participate in and contribute to their communities through full integration and inclusion in the economic, political, social, cultural, and educational mainstream of United States society.”

Council members are appointed by the Governor in compliance with Federal mandates stated in the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act. 60% of our Council includes individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities; parents or family members of individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities. The remaining positions are individuals who represent agencies that provide services to people with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

We’ve also created some videos for perspective Council Members to understand what it’s like to be a member of the Nevada Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities! We have this video available in English and Spanish!
